Three years after stopping Mount Rushless from erupting, the power washer and Harper Shaw buy a building in Muckingham and resume work across Caldera County. Clients text about jobs and local news. Jeff Jefferson XIII, now county mayor, launches a Town of the Year contest to extract favors. Renovations and protests add jobs. He demands cat Ulysses, whom they have kept since he abandoned her, threatening court. Jewels vanish from the giant merman statue, disabling its stabilising beam. At the monks' temple a secret passage holds Shaw's old phone. Time traveler Ceruleon Skye, left in an earlier era while working to stop a later disaster, warns the jewels must be restored. Geologist Karen Chissell says they are pacithyst, formed by an ancient planetary collision, the mineral Blake Thrust sought three years earlier. With them gone, quakes rise at the mountain and the moon begins spinning. Lawyer Xavion LeSage, secluded after a dirty jury blocked his case, says Jefferson still owns Ulysses. A covert mine fails repeatedly because a dirt storm disables equipment. Cleaning a truck from the storm reveals the jewels and a phone whose messages implicate Jefferson as the thief, who had planned to smuggle them to Thrust. LeSage prosecutes; Jefferson is stripped of office and arrested, and the washer becomes Ulysses' owner. A communal festival replaces the award ceremony. Shaw reinstalls the jewels and a second beam fires, yet the moon stays wild. Following the beam to Mount Rushless, the washer finds a pacithyst deposit and a Pacifist relic that dirt keeps from activating. Cleaning the relic restores the moon's rotation. The washer watches fireworks with Ulysses and her kittens.
