The Coalition’s Gears of War: E-Day drops you into Kalona on Emergence Day — fourteen years before the 2006 original — as a younger Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago scramble against the first Locust surge with new squadmates Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes. It launches Oct 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Premium Edition early access from Oct 1, and it’s day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass (Xbox Wire).

Most embargo coverage is campaign-only: multiplayer and Horde Siege were locked until early access. On that basis OpenCritic sits at an 87 Top Critic Average with about 90% recommending it (Mighty tier). Pure Xbox (10/10 on Series X|S) calls the combat the best in twenty years and Kalona a visual powerhouse; TechRaptor (9.5/10) says The Coalition has finally surpassed Epic’s trilogy; Completexbox scored it 100% and put it in its top three of the year. IGN’s provisional 9/10 praises a heartfelt Marcus/Dom prequel and evolved weapons and enemies even when you know how it ends.

The dissent is clearer on story and structure. GameSpot’s provisional 7/10 says the prequel has “nothing new to say,” treats familiar Locust and lore as novel for newcomers, and finds the open city blocks tedious side-mission padding. Wccftech (7.4/10 on PC) spent over 20 hours mopping up side content and flagged UE5 traversal stutter with Dynamic MFG, especially in Act 4’s refinery. Across outlets the consensus split is familiar: crunchy Gnasher/Lancer fights and weapon mods are the high, pacing in the semi-open Kalona zones and a safe prequel plot are the low.

How long? There’s no HowLongToBeat page yet. GameSpot’s length guide puts a normal campaign with some collectibles and side missions at about 10–14 hours (its own run was 11); Pure Xbox clocked roughly 16 hours on Hardcore; IGN’s first playthrough ran 15–18 hours. On Game Pass that length is an easy week of co-op nights — split-screen is two-player at 30fps on Series X per Pure Xbox — with Versus and Horde Siege still to be scored once live servers settle.

“E-Day pulls off the tightrope act of giving us a heartfelt prequel with strong characters even when we know how it ends.”— IGN

How it runs

Xbox Series X

Pure Xbox (Series X): Quality mode at 30fps is “an absolute looker”; Performance mode holds 60fps solidly but can look a little soft. Split-screen co-op is two players at 30fps. Digital Foundry’s Aug 2026 campaign preview (pre-release build) measured Quality ~1152p/30, Balanced ~1080p/40, Performance ~900–1000p/60 with occasional combat stutters — launch code may differ.

Xbox Series S

PC

Wccftech (PC) ran the campaign with Dynamic MFG and reported frequent stuttering, especially in Act 4’s open refinery map, describing classic UE5 traversal stutter. It also notes the built-in benchmark and that even with modern features the look falls short of full path-traced titles.

Accessibility
