Valor Mortis review

The Ghostrunner team’s first-person Soulslike mixes swordplay, pistol shots and parkour in an alternate Napoleonic war. Most critics had a good time, though bosses and PC stability let it down.

Valor Mortis is a first-person Soulslike from One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner. You play a soldier of Napoleon’s army, brought back from the dead in an alternate history overrun by monsters. It launched day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on Oct 13.

Most critics enjoyed it. The OpenCritic Top Critic Average is 79, with 78% recommending it. Eurogamer (4/5) likes how the sword, the pistol and magic-like transmutations fit together, and says the parkour helps it stand out. Push Square (8/10, PS5) praises the combat and level design, and says the reduced price makes up for weaker visuals and audio.

There are weak spots. IGN (7/10, PC) found too few bosses, and those it has underwhelming. DualShockers (8.5/10) counted only nine weapons. Shacknews (8/10, PC) found the way enemies notice and chase you confusing at times. GameSpot (6/10) says it tries to do too much.

Expect a long game. Push Square rolled credits at about 18 hours with most side quests done, and DualShockers played for 25. IGN hit hard crashes on PC. There’s no Xbox performance report yet, so watch for patch notes if that matters to you.

“Valor Mortis might not be your usual Soulslike, but it's a bloody good time.”— Eurogamer
